WHAT ARE ORTHODONTICS?
Orthodontics is a specialized area of dentistry focusing on the function of the teeth and jaw with regard to the way the teeth come together, often called the bite, and how the teeth are aligned. Many people think of braces or clear aligners used to straighten teeth when they think of orthodontics. However, orthodontics can also be a very useful tool in more complex dental cases involving bite and function as well.
WHY WOULD ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT BE NEEDED?
Orthodontic treatment might be needed to straighten your teeth or your child’s teeth. Orthodontics might also be necessary as part of a more complex treatment plan for adults in order to correct problems with function and bite.
WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR ORTHODONTICS?
Orthodontics are usually recommended for children, adolescents and adults who have crowded teeth, spacing issues, misaligned teeth or problems with their bite. Early intervention measures for children can even help create more space in the mouth during development. Some adults with more complex dental needs due to bite or functional issues can also benefit from orthodontic treatment.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING An ORTHODONTIC Consult?
An orthodontic consultation consists of taking x-rays showing the entire mouth, a visual exam by your dentist, and possibly impressions of your teeth to create study models. Your doctor will then discuss the different options available so you can choose what works best for you. In most cases, you will then be referred to an orthodontic specialist. However, we are able to treat some adults with simple cases in our office with Invisalign. In that case, you can then expect to come in regularly to have adjustments or new aligners made over the course of your treatment.
