Botox for TMJ (Temporomandibular Joints)
Botox for TMJ (Temporomandibular Joints)
WHAT IS TMj?
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), more commonly known as TMJ, are disorders of the jaw muscles, temporomandibular joints, and the nerves associated with chronic facial pain. Any problem that prevents the complex system of muscles, bones, and joints from working together in harmony may result in temporomandibular disorder.
Over 80% of the time pain associated with TMD is muscle derived, making a neurotoxin, like Botox, a good choice for treating the TMD muscles in order to help them relax. Neurotoxin treatments in this area can also improve symptoms of chronic headaches or migraines and prevent tooth wear and loss from extreme bruxism.
HOW LONG DOES BOTOX LAST?
You will begin to notice the effects of the neurotoxin within a few days, but it can take up to 2 weeks to notice full results. The results from Botox are temporary, and can last between 3-6 months. Multiple treatments are required to keep up with your Botox in order to maintain the desired results. However, after multiple treatments you may notice a weakening of the TMJ muscle, allowing you to go longer between appointments. Scheduling your Botox for TMJ treatments along with your teeth cleanings is a good schedule to maintain.
WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR TMJ TREATMENTS?
We will thoroughly examine the TMJ area when you come into our office. We not only listen for any unusual sounds when you open and close your mouth, but we'll monitor and check for range of motion and palpate the muscles associated with the TMJ. If it's found that you have problems with your TMJ, we will sit with you to discuss your options. Each patient is different in what will work best for them, and we are happy to provide you with the care that you need.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING TMJ TREATMENT with botox?
Your doctor will do a thorough exam evaluating all of the muscles associated with TMD. Problem areas will be marked and your doctor will determine how much Botox will be needed in each area. Once the treatment is planned, you will receive the necessary Botox injections to help alleviate your pain.
